Moody skies in Koh Samui
the day better. After just wasting a good hour looking up apps on the internet to help me manage my time better (oh the irony!) internet blocking devices etc i decided to man up and stop being so lazy and take the reigns myself. My phone has been left inside while i sit out on the balcony and work with the wifi switched off on my laptop. I work best with few distractions, i used to love listening to Radio 4 when i was working at home in the UK but i’ve not done it here in case it triggers homesickness. I’ve been feeling the pull to the UK and Italy already this week with the rugby, remembrance Sunday and the launch of the JL Christmas ad. So i don’t need anything else to trigger it.
The weather here is VERY rainy at the moment, which i kind of like, it makes me feel cosy and it ’s making me focus on the things that i really need to do this week. As it’s not that appealing to go outside and get drenched like i did the other day in Chiang Mai! It’s supposed to get nicer in a couple of days, which is perfect for me. 2 days to get myself up to speed and then i can go and enjoy the island in more comfort.
Delightful treats at Krua Bang Po in the rain!
After a very productive morning i did eventually venture out for a feeder session, what else could lure me out?! There are a series of small locally owned restaurants offering all sorts of Thai delights in the village at the bottom of the hill. Ducking out of the rain i picked the one closest to the hotel drop off point. It’s set right on the beach with a view of the moody clouds, but under shelter so no inflicted with a drop for my whole meal. A bit of a random selection by local standards but what i fancied all the same. I went for Morning glory with garlic and chilli and a sweet soy like sauce, Crispy squid with a tangy tamarind sauce. Oh it was so fresh and perfectly cooked. It was one of those dishes that was so good that even when i was full i wanted to carry on eating, but the portions at Krua Bang Po are so generous that i just couldn’t. This was all accompanied by glass noodles steamed with fresh juicy king prawns and morning glory coated with a fiery raw garlic and chilli fish sauce. Very fresh and moreish. I didn’t want it to end!
Foolishly instead of asking the hotel taxi to pick me up from the restaurant i wanted to walk back and see if i could grab pudding on my way home. Walking down the beach seemed silly as there were super quiet patches with no houses etc. So i went back on the road, even sillier as there were big puddles and it was dark… which led to muddy feet and a very glamorous look against the white stone floors of the hotel when i got back. Sans dessert as the 7-11 doesn’t have a great array of sweet treats, fresh fruit is the only real dessert here and i wanted something bad.
The next best thing was a nightcap at the bar at Samui Code, where i met some of the super friendly and funny family that run the place. They clearly have a passion for what they do and me feel very at home. Alas i had work to do, and was quickly ensconced back in the comforts of my suite.
