Snacks in Soderheim

Snacks in Soderheim

It was chucking it down all night last night so when i awoke all the Swedes were very sensible and had their wellies and ever so stylish Paddington bear style rain jackets on. Me being the anti weather checker, strolled out without any special equipment (Surely a Barbour can cope with anything anyway?!) and jumped on the tram to Soderheim. I promptly started sauntering around the glorious streets of Soderheim, it’s full of all sorts of independent bars, cafes, restaurants and shops.

Breakfast was mediocre (they don’t seem big on breakfast here, it’s another smorgasbord!) so i won’t go into detail on that, but i did come across a film studio and a cluster of traditional Swedish homes up on the hill. Then found everything i would ever need for any house i ever might own in a multitude of gorgeous antique shops around town. I had to step away and into the dangerous territory of the most wonderful clothes shops. Each appearing to have it’s own speciality, the one that caused me the most bother was one that stocks only Scandinavian 40s style brands, with the exception of one London label. She was most shocked to find that there was anyone mad enough to be walking the streets in the rain, but it all made sense when she realised i’m English “Oh” she said “This is normal for you isn’t it?” yes it rains every single day in England, 365 days a year…

Rubbish breakfast motivated me to find something delicious for lunch and the weatherist lady in the amazing clothes shop pointed me in the direction of Urban Deli. Holy moly, that place is sublime! They are like a mini Eataly, the best of the best of Sweden but also from other places

around the world. With treats from the mediterranean, Asia  and even the UK as well. I was still on my hunt for all things Swedish so went for some more Swedish sausage (contain yourselves people!) Lots of the specialities are pure comfort food, a giant Swedish sausage with potatoes, cabbage and pickled veg. It seems there is always something pickled on a Swedish plate, being quite partial to the odd bit of vinegar i’m quite enjoying that fact. The hot and cold mix takes a bit of getting used to though!

I took in the sights of the old city getting lost in Gamla Stan passing the Town Hall where all the Nobel prize dinners are held. I also popped into the nobel museum itself, which was quite small but a guided tour is worth waiting for, especially this week as they were announcing the winners every day so there was an excited buzz about the place as he told the story about how they weren’t able to get hold of one of them as he didn’t answer his phone. It was too early in Japan apparently!

It was raining again and i was tired so i went for some Swedish fast food, Tunnbrodsrulle was in order (Did i spell that right Fiona?!) which is a glorious Swedish sausage (again, yum!) with mashed potato, onion and cabbage all wrapped up in a light flatbread. It was just what i needed after a long day walking round in the rain. Pure comfort food.
