Halloween in Bangkok

Relaxing, working, shopping, partying, relaxing again

Although sad to leave Hong Kong, i was very excited to get to Bangkok and see one of my favourite couples, the gorgeous Mel and Dan. They are people that glow with energy and have clearly settled into life in Bangkok very well. Weekend getaways take on a different hue when you have the delights of South east Asia on your doorstep, and life there clearly suits them. I love hearing about their various travels and enjoying their wonderful hospitality.

My first glamorous task when i got there though was to sort and wash all my cold weather gear ready for sending back to the

UK. I won’t be needing that anywhere i’m planning on going any time soon! Life admin day over, and post a quick tea and catch up with Hello Kitty we had a party to prepare for, it was Halloween week and Mel & Dan were hosting a dinner party. First things first i needed a costume! You may be surprised to hear that despite my overpacking, there was no stash of fancy dress costumes and i was bereft a suitable outfit. My creative competitiveness surfaced alongside my red wrap around dress and after sourcing some funky red feather wings and some horns a devil incarnate was born.

Mel and I were on food shopping duty for the party, we duly headed off to the massage parlour… because that’s a necessity for party prep right?! We had a wonderfully relaxing morning enjoying a foot massage and a natter, before we realised that it was well past lunchtime and we hadn’t even made it to the supermarket yet. So we hurried off to Central with a well thought through list of about 6 things, filled a trolley and were about to saunter to the checkout when we realised we had a. no lunch and b. no mince for the chilli con carne “pumpkins”… Oh dear! we were clearly having too much fun. I do love a good saunter round a supermarket, especially the rather random Central supermarket and the various International sections that cater for the local embassy and expat staff. It seems to be a bit of a lucky dip what you are going to find every time you go in there, which must be a nightmare if you are a fussy eater. Good job i’m not!

Next on the list for party prep, lunch for the ladies! ha ha, i think Dan got a bit of a shock when he popped home in the early

afternoon and we were eating and drinking a cheeky glass of wine. But it was all under control, it was only the main that needed to be prepared and some decorating finished off as the other guests were bringing the other courses. We had done the bulk of the cobwebbing and horror creating the night before.

I volunteered my feeder services for the Chilli and cracked out my tried and tested recipe for the honour. I was excited to be cooking again after 5 weeks away from a kitchen, it was an absolute pleasure to be in possession of a silicone spoon again! The chilli seemed to go down well in the scary little “pumpkin” (orange pepper!) houses that i carved for them and everyone went to so much effort with all their costumes and food etc. We had brain filled vodka jelly, brain cocktails (chocolate Ice cream and baileys) spiderweb gazpacho to start, followed by chilli pumpkins and a graveyard of cake expertly decorated by David. Who underwent quite an interrogation to make sure that he had actually decorated it himself the poor guy. He hails from fame accorded by not knowing where his freezer was after being in his apartment for over a year, so you can understand the suspicion.

Nurse pain & Dr Hackemoff, you just wouldn’t trust them would you?!

Wardrobe efforts were quite spectacular as well, there was a Thai theme for the most part. We had a Thai lady boy and his/her expat husband in attendance, accompanied by their Thai moto taxi driver, the illustrious company of Gary Glitter elder and junior… and the more traditional Halloween guests Dr Hackemoff and Nurse Pain. It was a brilliant night, i timed out at about 2 am i think after the drinking games started to take affect and went to bed. I think the last man/woman standing was around 5am.

Ciao from a very tired cake lady in fear of a hangover!
