Be the person that says hello, you never know where it might lead

Pondering how i manage myself in my current environment for the next few months got me thinking about all the steps that led me here. If anyone had said to me this time last year that my life would be the way it is right now i would have said that they were mad. How on earth does that happen? It all stemmed from a few small acts. I have a lot to be thankful to small steps for…

Hello Gorgeous!

Hello Gorgeous! Point Nepean park

My little Hello vest has bought so much positive energy to my world. I bought that top with me as i thought it would be my lucky omen as i travelled to new places, surely people are going to be uber friendly to a person that is openly saying “hello” to everyone that they meet right?! It didn’t work out in Europe as it was too cold for me to wear the vest and too unseasonably warm for the hello jumper plus my Barbour jacket. But i did always wear it when i went to new places in warmer climes. It’s funny the positivity that one small word attracts, i often have people randomly say a cheery “hello!” to me in the street as a response. I forget that it’s there and it never ceases to make me smile when that happens.

It’s effect is enhanced by living life authentically and being open to new people, places and ideas. Being in that mindset has created what i call my current “movie like” existence, which sounds fab and it is. But it’s inherently scary at the same time. I have glossed over this fact in past posts and am feeling a little bad for as i enter a new scary phase. I’m struggling to overcome the fear a bit it and it’s made me reflect on the other times when i have felt like that and what i did to overcome it. One of those times that i defeated the fear led to some of my most movie star moments. It felt too exposing to write about it before, as it identified a weakness but i feel like i should and can now as a few other things have settled.

I owe that little T-shirt so much for my life in Melbourne. It was the reason that i went into the little eatery in Portsea on it’s first day of opening. The typeface was the same as my T-shirt and to me it was a sign in a small town that was where i was supposed to go. I popped in for a drink first which was when my Caribbean Prince decided that i couldn’t leave until he had taken the picture of me with the sign. Then I went for a wander around the town, exploring Point Nepean park and trying to find somewhere to watch the sunset. There was not a lot else open at that point as it was just the beginning of summer, and i failed to find somewhere that i could safely watch the sunset from without having to walk miles in the dark on my own or anywhere to eat. (I still can’t really do that but that’s a story for another post)

I gave up. I walked back to the car and resigned myself to having some kind of awful motorway snack on my way home. My

rational mind was screaming at me, why are you walking away from the cutest little eatery in the town knowing that you are going to have a rubbish meal instead. And missing the sunset? That’s your favourite part of the day! So why don’t i just walk straight back in? The answer, because i was scared. There was no way that they wouldn’t know that i had been in there already, as i was one of only about 4 people that were in there as it was opening day and they were only bedding in. They are going to think i am such an idiot for leaving and then going back in again surely?! Especially a girl on their own. I was going to miss out on a yummy dinner just because i was too scared to go back into the restaurant. I had to force myself to not be so ridiculous, and go back in. Why would they care? And honestly i’ll probably never see them again anyway…

I was reading my book minding my own business when the Caribbean prince showed up and started talking to me. He was so kind and sweet, asking about why i was in Melbourne. We got chatting and he made a great recommendation of somewhere easy to get to that i could walk to watch the sunset over Portsea. A super playful, and amiable guy he gave me his e-mail address and told me to contact him if i needed anything. He knows what it’s like to be new to the city and was happy to help in any way he could.

What a sweet guy. Not only, did i have a great meal, i had achieved my goal of finding a safe and pretty sunset viewing place and I had my first new Melbourne friend, less than one week after arriving. I had no idea that the Caribbean prince was actually hitting on me, but again that’s another story for another post! If i hadn’t made myself go in and face my irrational fear that people might think i was silly for retracing my steps i never would have made that connection. Which also led to some of the most interesting work relationships that i have made over the past couple of months. The positive thinking behind the T-shirt and a bit of courage to overcome irrational fears took me a long way.

Be brave, trust that the universe will deliver you the right things at the right time.

Baci a tutti x x
